Riden upon the frenzied airs

alighting soft tread upon a lawn bestrewn with sweet floral innocence

venture out beyond its garnered bouquet

led by tracings upon the winds, unseen hand to mine,

to cling to branches of tender tendrils, an alchemy aloft……

Here, writ large is a symphony composed by Geza Schoen and under the conductorship of Ormonde Jayne’s founder, Linda Pilkington for the new perfume of the Signature Collection. The release of Evernia in 2021 is once again the seamless orchestration always present in Ormonde Jayne, blended with absolute precision and harmony, making the sum greater than all its parts. It wears elegantly and with an unutterable sophistication.

As the name suggests it is an ode to Oakmoss, yet here this incredible piece of nature plays with a myriad of components, lifting a joyful effervescence from each and every one. A touch to ignite…

I have long been fascinated by ‘Evernia Prunastri’ as I walk the woodland behind my house, branches are festooned with this miracle of strange curiousity. It’s colour is enticing, yet undefinable, touch its delicacy, so downy and velvety. A form that seems wrought by otherworldly hands with a scent as I thrust my nose into its folds that is an eclectic melange of ozonic salinity, sexual liquidity, mineral, earthy and wildly chloronic, as if one has climaxed in the waves of a perfect shoreline.

Everwatching Evernia, its movements upon the winds, slyph in attendance, a unique waft, not of earth, not of sea, flower, fruit or terrestial form but something out beyond the edges of them all.

Christian Martin Weiss

Evernia from Ormonde Jayne is shot through with these graceful filaments of curiousity, a rich enticing that bids the others in its circle to dance aloft. Follow along the garden path, well defined, a quiet formality…… but with discreet undercurrents of an anticipation, a withheld breath waiting to join the wilder breezes.

Commencement is the brightening of a champagne morning, lit through the mists, like crevasses of light sparkling with spices. Enter into this garden of delights, barefoot and kissed with dew, a gentle crushing that flies with the scent of watery soles. Yet not so far, an enticement awaits just beyond the garden walls, a little mayhem, a little yearning, a thundering miniscule of a call not to be ignored.

Flowers in abundance, neatly arranged and formally dressed lean to listen……. what is the wilderness beyond the garden saying? Something of a quite different nature is beguiling the prim and proper!

Kirsty Mitchell - Wonderland

All the florals, Lily of the Valley, Fressia, Jasmine, Violet and Rose like caged wild birds are loosed from their confines, in a single rush at the mysterious encounter with Oakmoss and his woodly attendants, at once all manner of liberties pour forth as if they were touched by a madness, a bright lunacy to surrender to their tenderest and most luminous attributes. Blushing with the rouge tint of a maidens cheek when eyes first set upon them. Florals that sing out in glorious harmony as the first birds chorus of Spring unleashed.

There is much cavorting and hitherto unseen facets, the florals are bedecked in all their glory, enamoured by the stranger from the forest in their midst.

Companions unite, Cashmere, Sandalwood and Musk to continue the elegant enchantment. Evernia is a troupe that accompanies me in a mantle of charm and glamour, lingering, ever-glimpsing the reveries and exultant flowers of the bower smitten with the fellowes of the wood. It remains as an intoxication, long after the florals have departed into the woods, piper led, leaving the most delicate fingerlings of their presence entwined with the mischievous ones from beyond the wall.

Heath Robinson - A Midsummer Night’s Dream, 1916

Evernia is a timeless perfume, easily traversing time, nuances of Edwardian elegance combined with a modernity. A concoction of changeling nature, it leaves me with that frisson of internal excitation and a blush of floral beauty as I too have been momentarily touched by its profundity. An allure you can never fully comprehend but must endlessly try, a pure captivation.

I was gifted an 8ml sample from Ormonde Jayne, as always, my thanks.
