I first met the fascinating man called Lorenzo Pazzaglia in Milan at Exsence 2022, he is a presence, no doubt and one cannot fail to notice him even in a crowd, there is a charisma that is honest and clear, with eyes that are as magnets to the soul. Despite our language difference there was a certain acknowledgement one to the other and he passed to me a small bag of perfume samples. Our mutual friend, Filippo Sorcinelli also asked me to kindly explore his friends collection hitherto unknown to me.

As I traversed this collection, a couple stood out to me as something quite exceptional, perfumes I enjoy wearing and that impress on me notes of quality and in their composition. How strange then, to discover one of my selection was a perfume called Carbonara, as in the distinctive Italian pasta of great renown. Lorenzo was originally a chef, owning his own restaurant, Il Poggio in Cagli and has that inherited love of good food that runs in the blood of Italians and that is envied by the world, why not, then, when creating his perfume house, create a perfume to encapsulate this dish, but not only a dish but to capture this inherent passion of Italy and the Italians as well.

Carbonara is the culmination of all that is held close in Italy, all its ingredients like a trusted recipe come together to fulfill the perfect dish, one that nourishes and draws loved ones close, induces conviviality and shared moments. The masterly combination of the pink, black and malabar pepper are mouthwateringly alluring, this is the best pepper trio in perfume I have encountered, it shimmers in a vivacious furl and in combination with elemi sets the table . Sultry coconut merged with smoke speak of languid evenings in intimate company.

Certain tides of the day or night ritual linger on the crowded streets, pulsing with life and vibrancy, all notion of the days toil evaporates in the issuing aromas from every kitchen and balcony, the clothing hung to dry as banners sweeping the twilight air announcing the occasion to come, all are lured by the scents on a humid summers eve. Herbal nuances, a first bright and freshly collected, mingle with creamy sauces, a blessed coupling.

This perfume encompasses all that is valued and cultivated in the Italian soul, it speaks in volumes of another era where life was simpler and the elegant pleasures of good food and a warm hearth were prized, close ones and strangers alike sat at the same table and drank of the comfort that gathered there. As the evening wears on and the vino and table are partaken of, the warmth of hearth pervades all who share in it. Soft warmth like the glow of a fire lighting the room, reflected in the cheek or the arms of a close embrace emanate from the skin, lit softly by sweetened notes, a tiramisu, a vin santo and cantucci to ward off the night.

Lorenzo has crafted his signature dish into one of the most surprising and delightful perfumes, the name is so much more than a nod to his legacy as a chef, it is La Dolce Vita and the chef is in residence, not just a dish but the Italian way of life, take a seat, raise a glass and partake of simple, elegant comfort, nourishing in so many ways
