Curious Worlds of Perfumed Endeavour - Discoveries of Esxence - Part the First June 2022

Nothing of any great beauty was ever created in a rush, lately I have been questioning our culture and obsession with efficency, how so much can be overlooked or lost in the dashing forwards. I, myself am an certified wanderer, taking my time to meander and follow untrodden paths when beckoned. Strangely I still reach the goal, whatever it may be, except my voyage there was richer for the lingering. A winemaker by profession I know the value of time and letting things be until the moment of perfection is acheived, so it is with many paths of creation, my written words included.
Much has been said by my esteemed colleaugues of this gathering in Milan a few weeks ago in a sweltering Milan, that group of like minded souls drawn together by shared love of perfumes and perfumery and also drawn to the many who inhabit this place out of time.

It was, by all accounts, feasting for the senses on a scale larger than ever and frequented by more people, truly an enormous collective outbreathing of relief after 3 long years of absence, there were just too many people to see and too many perfumes to experience them all. I have already given a photo diary of all of the marvellous people with whom I reconnected after such a long time and the new friends. As most of you who know my writing style you will therefore understand that reports are really not my forte, I prefer deeper communion with the perfumes that choose me, but yet I attempt here to convey the myraid facets that I encountered at Exsence. Certain undercurrents of revival ran through the offerings, cleaner, brighter and more transparency was in great evidence, perfumes that are clear and bright with a joyfulness and with winks and nods at the beauty and verdancy of nature. Also I was happy to see a plethora of summer orientation, sunshine and the pure unadultered pleasure of just relaxing underan azure sky. Oudh was still present but in much more refined aspects, perfumers presenting intelligent and bright aspects of this often too heavy and animalic component, fascinating to scent these higher attributes. As for one of my favourite components, Fig, this was in quite a few notable new creations and very well done too.
All of this and more as I travelled my way through 4 days , a place standing alone in time where perfumed creations leapt forth and friendships and discoveries flourished, a brief reminder about what living is for and that our current ‘reality’ is just one of many.
There are many new creations that I should wish to mention, so to avoid this becoming a full blown novel I shall remark with a few placed together, and in a couple of parts, there is no particular order to my enthusiasm and all exhibit different facets that appeal to me, some will elict the torrent of words at a later date.

Verdant Delirivm - Santi Burgas Perfums - a wildy verdant captivation of a garden gone into an untamed romping, where nature and order meet and are entwined amongst foilage. It is highly unique and exquisite. A beautiful and complete expression of the soothing and regenerative force of green. A true highlight for me.
Summer In Paro and Autumn in Lhoka - Hima Jomo. This entire collection was an unmissable encounter at Exsence, truly exceptional with a presence of authenticity. All caught my attention with Summer and Autumn vying for my favours. A brand of exceptional quality whose creations tore into my emotions in the most beautiful fashion eliciting raw and intense communion. Summer In Paro transports me to that place of endless blue and skin blessed with a thousand solar rays, all is in abundant life and endless slowed movement. Autumn in Lhoka, bought tears to my eyes, a comfort of heart and the warmth of gentle caresses.
Nemus and Purpureum by NVC . A fabulous new collection from Neela Vermeire, three expressions of fragrant fragments of our imaginings. Nemus is a spring virtue, a bursting forth, a leap of joy and renewal in the wake of all we have endured. Simply a renewal of faith in the hope of renewal. Purpureum is a comfort, an embrace that enfolds and the perfect combination of a physical and a spiritual presence that aids us in difficult times.
Meoexis - Manos Gerakinis My dear friend you have triumphed again, a departure into a different territory I adore how you are embracing the unknowns and extending outwards. Here in Meoexis is a delicious combination of Figues and Honey that is warm and inviting, also downright delicious, evoking days and epochs past when a simple feast of such in the presence of the God’s was a ritual observance in itself. Meoexis will be released on July 18th.
Echoes of Silence - Christele Jacquemin. Three new releases from a house and creator I deeply admire, all stemming from Christele’s work as a photographer. Echoes of Silence is a magnificent construsted perfume inspired by artistic interpretation in Murcia, Spain. It inspires us to transcend and transform the past into a resurrected moment now. Bright and translucent it conjures a quality of light that can pervade us and gift us tranquility borne out of difficult moments.
Encore du Temps - Meo Fuscuini. No Exsence would ever be complete without the moments stolen between intense meetings with my dear and close friends Meo and Federica. Always time stops and Encore du Temps is an ode to the connection between them. My written piece is accessed here.
