Elemental Immersion Cyan Nori Abel Odor Frances Shoemack Issac Sinclair 2020
Half the world away, seasons and time are reversed and the world has closed its doors to those of us of adventurous spirit and wanderlust. Yet still we travel, in imagery conjured by the camera, the written word or most intensly with our olfactory sense. Here, in France, on the cusp of Spring I have been devotedly attending my gardens, all three of them and time runs through the hourglass, I am impotent to slow its rush. Finally I pause, to write and am taken voyaging onto well known coasts and into a sea whose caress I remember well. Abel Odor, created by Frances Shoemack, a fellow New Zealander and winemaker as myself in collaboration with another kiwi, perfumer Issac Sinclair, have a collection that is superb. I own most and adore all.

Cyan Nori is a quiet, stilling revelation of simple pleasures, it piques my curiosity with its quirky and evocative opening, its initial brightness is blinding akin to the reflection of summer sunlight on a mirrored sea. The opening citrus glance off the surface of skin, an echoing spume of the sway of waves, sparkling points of shimmering water. It is the scent of the sensation when one has rested too long in the sun and the skin thirsts for the kiss of salinity and the thrilling invigoration of the water. A slight and tempting hint of sun bleached sea flotsam and jetsam rises with the Nori aspect which is salty and curious, a delight of transportation to the simple pleasures of a deserted stretch of sand and myriad hues of turquoise and aquamarine, where airblown I rest with salt sprinkled skin and hair…..
Cyan Nori is the connection to the elemental nature of water and air, the body in complete submersion, between sea, sky and flesh in almost nuptial intimacy.
Possessed with a longevity, there is entwined in this perfume, a scent of the liberty of waterplay, the nightime revelry of dark ocean suddenly alight with the otherwordly spectacle of inflorescence, I have often delighted in this, stirring and splashing the sea with limbs that are lit with cyan lights. Watery illuminations extend the boundaries of flesh, extremities tinged with fireflies.
Cyan Nori is breathtaking and unfathomable, stretching out over the horizon, our senses taken in expansiveness, a shapeshifter of the elements. Unobtrusive to be almost etheric in nature, a force akin to the gentle lulling of waves and the zephyrs of offshore breezes….Seamless simplicity and a refined beauty it is a cipher for the times ahead.
